The fundamental split is how the app knows you need a break:

• Timer / activity-based — the app watches the clock (and sometimes your keyboard/mouse activity or fullscreen state) and prompts breaks on a schedule. LookAway and Blink Eye work this way.

When each app is the right choice

Choose LookAway if…

you want a mature, polished break scheduler and you're happy with time-based prompts. It's a well-built product with flexible break rules, and it never touches your camera because it simply doesn't need one for its approach.

Choose Blink Eye if…

you want free and open source, or you need Windows or Linux. It's a clean timer-based reminder you can audit yourself. On a Mac-only setup you give up some macOS polish, but the price and transparency are unbeatable.

Choose Slow Blink if…

you've tried timer apps and learned to ignore them. A timer prompts you whether you need it or not — and prompts that are sometimes pointless get dismissed, then disabled. Slow Blink only steps in when your eyes have actually stopped blinking, which makes each reminder feel earned. And because the reminder is a small cat peeking at you rather than an alarm, it stays likeable for months instead of days. You also get real blink statistics — your measured blink rate over time, kept entirely on your Mac.

The honest trade-off: Slow Blink uses your webcam while you work (that's the whole point). All analysis runs on-device with the video never stored or transmitted — the same privacy posture as apps that use no camera at all, but if you simply don't want a camera active, a timer app is the right call for you.
